Digital Twin-empowered Landslide Emergency Risk Management

Landslides are among the most catastrophic natural hazards around the world. Of the many possible triggers, rainstorms and earthquakes have induced 85% of fatal landslides, killing over 180,000 people worldwide in the past 40 years.
To scientifically manage landslide risks in the digital era, a multidisciplinary joint university-government-industry project is proposed, engaging experts in geotechnical engineering, construction informatics, computer science, remote sensing, hydrology, transportation, emergency management, and public policy.
This project will advance digital and smart management of landslide risks for enhancing slope safety preparedness and augmenting management capabilities under extreme storms and earthquakes, thus increasing public safety and enabling the sustainable and resilient development of Hong Kong and other regions. It aims to develop a unique city-scale simulation-enabled digital twin for comprehensively sensing, simulating, visualising, and managing landslide hazards, as well as for communicating with people at risk and coordinating societal emergency responses. A new paradigm of natural hazard emergency risk management science will be developed eventually.
