The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Taiping Reinsurance Co., Ltd. (TPRe) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 4, 2025, to jointly develop and transfer new technologies to solve problems faced by the insurance industry and to gradually establish a long-term partnership. The signing ceremony was held at the China Taiping Finance Center.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Professor Limin Zhang, Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was awarded the inaugural National Engineer Award in January 2024. He was the only scholar from higher education institutions in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to receive such a prestigious accolade.
In a special conversation, Prof. Zhang shared that he shifted his research focus from bridge foundations and dams to multi-hazard analysis and risk management because of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan as his turning point. While helping the Hong Kong government oversee a road construction project in the region, Prof. Zhang came up with ways to mitigate hazards and future risks that could affect the road. Read more

Prof. Limin Zhang was featured in the article published by Hong Kong Wen Wei Po in its Disaster Resilience through Research Series. Funded by the Research Grant Council (RGC) through the Theme-based Research Scheme, Prof. Zhang’s team now developing the first city-scale Digital Twin system capable of covering all slopes in Hong Kong.

The first progress meeting for the Theme-based Research Scheme, the Digital Twin-Empowered Landslide Emergency Management Project, was held on December 03, 2023 at HKUST, which paved a 3-hour fruitful discussion on the project's goals and initiatives among its respected attendees. This meeting served as a key step to launch an effective collaboration between the project members, and set a benchmark for the project's proposed research plans.

Awarded Research Grants Council (RGC)'s Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) 2023/24 (Thirteenth Round)
The Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) has announced the latest project to receive funding under the Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) on 13 July 2023. The project, " Digital Twin-empowered Landslide Emergency Risk Management," has been awarded HK$ 73.945 million and will be led by Project Coordinator Prof. Limin Zhang, Head and Chair. Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, HKUST.
